Furniture firm closes – 40 jobs go

Aug 09, 2013

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s unemployment rate jump in South Australia, another business has closed its doors with jobs lost.

Modular Furniture, in Royal Park, is closing down today after 50 years in business, with 40 people left out of work.

A company worker told InDaily this morning it was a difficult day for the local firm.

“We’re just working our way through the day today,” the worker said.

Yesterday, the ABS revealed that SA’s unemployment rate jumped last month to 7.1 per cent, the highest seasonally adjusted rate in 11 years.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall seized on the issue today, pointing out that Modular Furniture sits in the electorate of Premier Jay Weatherill.

“Modular Furniture has been a proud South Australian company since 1963 – this is a very sad day for everyone involved,” Marshall said.

“Modular Furniture has been in business since Thomas Playford was Premier, but now, under Jay Weatherill’s leadership, they’ve been forced to close their doors.

“However, instead of facing up to South Australia’s jobs crisis, Mr Weatherill is more interested in playing politics with this issue and coming up with excuses, rather than solutions.”
