Early COVID outbreaks saw cruise ships become a target for satire, but Melbourne-based comedy duo Mel & Sam (Mel O’Brien and Samantha Andrew) have always found them inherently funny, and they use the Spirit of Tasmania – the ultimate party cruise – as a platform for their topical, absurd and hilarious new production.

Returning after a stellar run at the 2022 Fringe, when they won a Fringe award for their production No Hat, No Play! The Cabaret!, O’Brien and Andrew open Shit-Wrecked! in sparkly swimsuits, bejewelled chokers and sneakers. Their first song is titled “Ships are Hot”, which, coupled with ridiculously amusing choreography, sets the tone for the show.

The two perform skits between their extensive set of original songs, and each is a poke at various passengers and services that might be found on a cruise: a couple celebrating an anniversary; Lunar Park employees; even a crèche. However, each song goes down an unexpected route, expanding into a broader societal observation or absurdity, not necessarily related to the cruise.

There’s a tune about conspiracies, with mention of the anti-vax generation – a crowd favourite that the pair perform in wrap-around sunnies and suit jackets over their swimsuits. There are references to NFTs, myki card inspectors, f*ckboys, queerness, hook-ups and side-hustle jewellery businesses.

Shit-Wrecked! is a cascade of wit, humour and physical comedy. Each song is fast-paced and energetic. From the moment the performers appear on stage, there is complete commitment to the heightened nature of the entertainment – it’s over-the-top, and a necessity for this satire. O’Brien and Andrew are sharp in their deliveries and share a creative and comedic chemistry that is thoroughly engaging for audiences.

It is no surprise, from the content, speed and style of delivery, that Andrew has a prominent following on TikTok, an account which often features O’Brien. The pair know how to hold an audience’s attention and speak to the zeitgeist in a way that sets them apart from the crowd.
