Political edge in opportunity for individual artists and teams

Guildhouse and Flinders University Museum of Art (FUMA) have launched the 2024 Guildhouse Collections Project, with $7500 on offer to each selected individual artist or team of artists.

The project invites artists to apply to research and develop new ambitious work in response to FUMA’s Australian Political Poster & Print collection, with the selected project culminating in a curated exhibition at the FUMA Gallery with a printed catalogue during SALA 2024. 

FUMA collections curator Nic Brown has provided a curatorial rationale – The Disquiet – which reflects on “the alternative cultural movements and political activism of the 1970s” documented in FUMA’s Australian Political Poster & Print Collection.

Artists can access the collection and curators from December 2023.

Guildhouse says “successful artists or artist teams, will research and develop major new work in parallel, not necessarily in collaboration, allowing an in-depth and broad response to the collection and curatorial theme”.

New films added to AFF program

The Adelaide Film Festival has added two films to this year’s program – one filmed partly in South Australia and both with a common star.

All of Us Strangers, set in contemporary London, is filled as a “supernatural queer-romance” starring Andrew Scott (Fleabag) and Paul Mescal (Aftersun, Normal People).

Mescal also stars in the second film added to the program, Foe, directed by Garth Davis (Lion, Top of the Lake). Shot in Victoria and South Australia, Mescal stars with Saoirse Ronan (Little Women, Atonement) as a couple farming a secluded piece of land in the not-too-distant future. Their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) appears with a startling proposal. The film’s themes include the nature of humanity and artificial intelligence.

The Adelaide Film Festival runs from October 18-29.

Dog-Eared Readings with JM Coetzee

Adelaide’s newest literary event series – Dog-Eared Readings – is holding its second session, this time with Nobel Prize-winning author JM Coetzee in conversation with Shannon Burns.

The two readers for the night – at 7pm on Wednesday October 25 –  will be speculative fiction writer Lisa Hannett and poet Jelena Dinic.

The event, to be held at the Howling Owl in the city’s East End, is capped at 50 people. To reserve a spot, send an email to [email protected]

Helpmann Academy grad exhibition on the move

The 2024 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition will be held at a new location next year – the University of South Australia’s South Australian School of
Art (SASA) Gallery.

The academy has inked a three-year partnership with UniSA to deliver the annual event which sees the top emerging visual arts graduates from UniSA and Flinders University exhibit
their works.

Helpmann Academy CEO Jane MacFarlane said the previous partnership with ACE had been invaluable and she thanked the team for the opportunities they provided graduates.

“Partnering with ACE – South Australia’s leading independent contemporary visual arts organisation – was a rich and invaluable experience for the Helpmann Academy and the emerging artists that were exhibited during this period,” she said.

“We are so excited to now be moving to this new location and staying in the West End. The South Australian School of Art (SASA) with its 150 plus year history, is an incubator for some of our state’s most significant artists.”

The 2024 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition opens on Thursday, February 15, and runs until March 22. The VIP Vernissage preview will be on Wednesday February 14.
