A special dance performance featuring Australian Dance Theatre founder Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is one of the highlights of this weekend’s entertainment in Adelaide.

There are also shows by Cuba’s Ballet Revolución,  a sing-along presentation of The Sound of Music, gigs by My Friend the Chocolate Cake and Dead Letter Circus, and two new exhibitions opening at the Samstag Museum of Art.

Footy fans can enjoy entertainment in Elder Park and on the Riverfront to coincide with Sunday’s AFL Showdown and Monday’s soccer match between Liverpool and Adelaide United.

L – Mirramu Dance Company

To coincide with Australian Dance Theatre’s 50^th anniversary, founder Elizabeth Cameron Dalman is bringing her current company, Mirramu, to Adelaide for a performance on Saturday night. Dalman, who is now aged 81, still dances, teaches and choreographs, and will perform in L, an autobiographical work telling the story of a dancer as she ages. Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music

Also marking its 50^th anniversary this year is movie musical The Sound of Music – and to celebrate there will be a one-night-only sing-along screening event at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre tonight (Friday). If you’re not confident you known all the words to songs such as “Do-Re-Mi” and “Edelweiss”, never fear – lyrics will also be shown on the screen. Audience members are encouraged to dress up and bring a few of their favourite friends. Details here.

 Ballet Revolución

Cuba’s Ballet Revolución performs a fusion of contemporary and classical dance to Latin-American rhythms and pop hits from musicians including Sia, Usher, Lorde and Beyoncé. The show features 19 dancers accompanied by an eight-piece band and makes for a fun night out, says InDaily’s reviewer. Ballet Revolución  is at Her Majesty’s Theatre until Sunday, with matinee and evening performances.

Football fan zone

Elder Park is being transformed into a “football fan zone” for the next three days in the lead-up to Monday’s match between Liverpool and Adelaide United at Adelaide Oval. There will be a virtual penalty shootout under a 12m x 12m dome, activities such as foosball and air hockey, a DJ, and food and drink. The “Claymore Club” will be open until late at Blue Hive, on the southern end of the Riverbank promenade, and Fork on the Road food trucks will also be in Elder Park on Sunday for the Showdown between Port Power and the Adelaide Crows. Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices

Exploring the cultural and spiritual exchange between Europe and Asia during the era of the spice trade, this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia comprises around 300 works including paintings, furniture, textiles, ceramics and engravings. It is imbued with stories of adventure, shipwrecks, piracy and treasure. Samstag Museum of Art

Two new exhibitions open today at the Samstag Museum of Art. The first, Birth of the Cool, comprises works by four painters (David Aspden, Sydney Ball, Michael Johnson and Dick Watkins) from the decade 1963-73, considered a golden era of avant-garde art in Australia. The second show, Geoff Wilson: Interrogated Landscape, features more than 70 works – including paintings, works on paper and sketchbooks – recognising the lifetime achievement of the South Australian artist. Both exhibitions continue until September 18.

 Women with Latitude

This 30-strong a cappella ensemble, currently led by singer Libby O’Donovan, will be performing on Saturday night at Holden Street Theatres. The group performs a repertoire of contemporary, multicultural, traditional and gospel songs, and most recently performed at the Adelaide Fringe with Spooky Men of the West.

Bear With Me – Windmill Theatre

Perfect school holiday entertainment, this show by Adelaide’s Windmill Theatre and Brisbane’s Metro Arts is a tribute to the teddy bear, featuring songs, laughter and plenty of audience participation. Kids are encouraged to bring along their favourite bear or stuffed toy. It’s recommended for ages three to six, with performances at the Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until July 19. My Friend the Chocolate Cake

ARIA-winning folk-rock band My Friend the Chocolate Cake have dusted off their first two albums (1991’s My Friend The Chocolate Cake and 1994’s Brood) for their current tour. Singer David Bridie says the first LP cost just $1200 to make and is probably their most successful album, while Brood features their most successful song, “I’ve got a Plan”. The band will play the two releases back-to-back over two one-hour sets at The Gov tonight (Friday).

Dead Letter Circus

Queensland alt-rock band Dead Letter Circus are performing a series of intimate shows in capital cities to support the release of their new single, “While You Wait”, and will be playing at the Adelaide UniBar on Saturday night. The group’s first two albums reached number two on the ARIA charts, and the gigs will give fans a taste to what expect on their third release, Aesthesis, due out next month.

Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers

The Coonawarra wine region is digging out some treasures from the cellars to offer visitors a rare opportunity to taste and buy aged wine during the month of July. Cellar Dwellers includes dinners and cellar-door events.

Mary Poppins

Magical nanny Mary Poppins and her supercalifragilisticexpialidocious escapades are being brought to the Adelaide stage this month by Matt Byrne Media. Based on author PL Travers’ classic children’s books, Mary Poppins the musical is playing over five weeks, with a run at the Arts Theatre until July 18, and then at Elizabeth’s Shedley Theatre from July 23 until August 1. Science & Art: 12 Years of the Waterhouse Prize

This free retrospective exhibition at the South Australian Museum displays all the overall winners of the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize since it launched in 2002. Each work is paired with material from the museum’s own and other collections to further explore the science behind the art. Science & Art is open daily until July 19.
