Poem: Drought Survival

This week’s two poems – about drought and serenity – are from Fleurieu Peninsula resident Melanie Rees, who writes fiction and poetry and is currently studying professional writing at the Adelaide College of the Arts.

Drought Survival

Fear not the hateful sun
grieve not for barren years
despise not the Rain God
who reneged on promised tears.

Serenity

Serenity is silk sheets
upon bare skin.
Woollen socks
cuddling toes
on a Winter morn.
Fido’s sandpapery slobbering tongue
licking cheeks barely awake.
A southerly breeze tousling hair
After a 43 degree Adelaidean day,
and keyboard felt under fingertips
as words escape the soul.

Melanie has a literary blog at www.flexirees.wordpress.com.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems up to 30 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to [email protected]. A poetry book will be awarded to each contributor.
