Review: Sammy J and Randy Land

Purple puppet Randy and his best buddy Sammy J invite audiences to their own theme park in a new show that will leave you in fits of laughter - if you’re not offended by swearing, that is. ★★★★

Still riding the wave from their award-winning ABC TV series Rickets Lane, the duo are now embarking on a quest of jolly proportions in which friendships will be tested and common sense abandoned.

They’ve got a loan to develop a theme park which they plan to manage as a “carny” team, putting a bit of themselves into its ill-advised attractions. But the transition doesn’t go smoothly, with each plotting to independently gain control over the expensive asset in its entirety.

The show opens with the spotlight illuminating a flamboyant Sammy J, who launches into a musical number which, frankly, isn’t the greatest. But then a purple puppet “thing” pops up his head and begins intelligently and vulgarly mocking his childish act.

This continues throughout the show, with Randy continuously breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge just how absurdly (yet genius) the show’s plot, props, stars and childish jokes truly are.

Sammy J and Randy are silly and sidesplittingly hilarious, with a show that is not just led by a funny plot. Their improv will leave most audience members hurting from laughter and their quick responses to mistakes – such as a heckler, or an eye falling off a puppet – is unique.

With an array of local jokes mocking South Australian life, mixed in with the usual musical and rant comedy fans would expect from the comedic pair, Sammy J & Randy Land will appeal to those who like things a lot “out-there” and “silly smart”.   It’s a show for the silly child in every adult.

Four stars

Sammy J & Randy Land is in the Garden of Unearthly Delights until March 13.
