What’s on: Music, Movie Masterpieces & SALA Soul

Movie Masterpieces at the Entertainment Centre; after-hours art with SALA Soul at the gallery; My Friend the Chocolate Cake; Todd McKenney and Georgie Parker sing duets, a new take on Shakespeare’s rebel prince and more.

My Friend the Chocolate Cake – Dunstan Playhouse

Triple ARIA winners My Friend the Chocolate Cake – featuring songwriter David Bridie, cellist Helen Mountfort and violinst Hope Csutoros – are performing at the Adelaide Festival Centre tonight as part of a national tour following the recent release of The Revival Meeting, their eighth studio album in a 28-year career. You can get a taste of what’s in store with this official video for the single “Jeffrey Smart (Silver City)”. Tickets still available last we looked.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

Jazz/funk band Souzi D Wilson and the Cool Mints kick off this evening’s First Fridays after-hours event at the gallery. With the theme SALA Soul, it will include a panel discussion about the state of the arts in South Australia (at 6pm in the Elder Wing), guided tours of the Ramsay Art Prize and works by SA artists, and a pop-up studio to coincide with the exhibition of Sally Smart’s new work The Choreography of Cutting. First Fridays runs from 6pm-9pm.

Movie Masterpieces II: The Sequel – AEC

Presented by film critic Margaret Pomeranz and conducted by Guy Noble, this Adelaide Symphony Orchestra concert will include music from an eclectic collection of films including Star Wars, Babe, Doctor Zhivago, Gladiator and To Kill a Mockingbird. There will be two Movie Masterpieces II performances at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre tonight and tomorrow.

Emil and the Detectives – Myer Centre

This weekend sees the final performances of Slingsby theatre company’s latest show, an adaptation by SA playwright Nicki Bloom of German author Erich Kästner’s 1929 novella Emil and the Detectives. It follows a child who is robbed during a train trip and ends up banding together with a group of young “detectives” to bring the thief to justice. The play is being presented at the old Dazzeland site, on level five of the Myer Centre. Read InDaily‘s review here.

Todd McKenney & Georgie Parker duets – Her Maj

Duets – Together In Concert sees Australian performers McKenney and Parker singing, dancing and performing a range of their favourite duets, including Elton John/Kiki Dee, Tina Turner/Jimmy Barnes, Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers and Annie Lennox/Aretha Franklin. There’s one show only at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday night.

South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival

Fringe will host three street art tours during SALA.

The 2017 SALA Festival features 660 free exhibitions across Adelaide and regional SA encompassing all forms of visual art including painting, sculpture, jewellery and multi-media (including exhibitions of the work of SALA featured artist Christopher Orchard at BMGArt and the Art Gallery of SA). The first of a series of Adelaide Fringe SALA street art tours will take place at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) from Chesser Lane (details here), while the Helpmann Academy will host its SALA Walk and Luncheon next Friday. Other upcoming events include a SALA Gala Dada Dance at The Old Regent (August 26), and AfterDark SALA in the Port (August 11). SALA continues throughout August, with the full program here.

Cry God for Harry – Space Theatre

Adelaide’s Independent Theatre director, Rob Croser, draws on four of Shakespeare’s history plays – Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 and Henry V – for this production, which charts the education of Henry V at the hands of his two “father figures”. Starring Will Cox as the wild young prince who frequents London’s taverns, Cry God for Harry is playing at the Space Theatre until August 12. Details here.

ASO’s Portraits & Variations – Town Hall

Featuring guest conductor Matthew Halls and flautist Geoffrey Collins, this Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Master Series concert will comprise three well-known works – Brahms’ Haydn Variations, Beethoven’s Prometheus: Overture and Elgar’s Enigma Variations – alongside a new flute concerto from Australian composer Ian Munro. There will be two performances at the Town Hall next Friday and Saturday (August 11 and 12). Soundstream’s Either Or – Elder Hall

Soprano Allison Hall (above) will join Adelaide music collective Soundstream for a one-off performance of the operatic monologue La Plus Forte at its Either Or concert at Elder Hall next Wednesday (August 9). The concert will also feature new electro/acoustic works by Australian composers Erkki Veltheim, Leah Blankendaal and Cat Hope, “inspired by the exploration of infants’ babbling accompanied by Bach, to distilling sonic sounds through an iPad, to work inspired by the literature of Maggie Nelson”. Kokoda – Star Theatres

This new World War II drama by Adelaide writer Peter Maddern tells the story of a street-wise larrikin, Private Morris Powell (played by Todd Gray), and his mates who “helped do the impossible – stop the Japanese advancing in New Guinea and then send them packing”. Kokoda is at at Star Theatres, Sir Donald Brandman Drive, until August 5. Details here.

Marathon – Bakehouse Theatre

This one-act drama-comedy sees two friends go on a training run where they run into their past and their future in “a beautifully simple exploration of what it means to be alive”. Marathon is being presented at the Bakehouse by Adapt Enterprises until August 6.

Ramsay Art Prize – Art Gallery of SA

The work of the 21 national finalists in the inaugural Ramsay Art Prize is on show until August 27. The $100,000 prize, which is supported by philanthropist organisation the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, is open to Australian artists under 40 working in any material or process, with finalists’ work including paintings, installations, ceramics, video and mixed media. It was won by Sydney-based artist Sarah Contos with a “colossal 20th-century quilt” (read more here).

The Summation of Force & a e i o u – Samstag Museum

SA photographers Trent Parke and Narelle Autio’s multi-channel video project The Summation of Force explores the world of cricket and was filmed almost entirely in the couple’s backyard with their two young sons. Also currently showing is Michelle Nikou: a e i o u, a survey of the work of the SA contemporary artist and Samstag Scholar. Both exhibitions run until September 1.
