What’s on: Wonderwalls, Fleurieu art and a ‘post-electric play’

A three-day street-art showcase in Port Adelaide, the Fleurieu Festival, fiery operatic tales of lust and betrayal, a dark Simpsons-centred comedy, FELTspace street cinema, exhibitions, movies and more.

Wonderwalls – Port Adelaide

The three-day Wonderwalls Festival, beginning today, will see 24 street artists from around the world converge on Port Adelaide to create large-scale murals on buildings and walls. The festival includes artist talks, a walking tour of festival sites, photo tours, an exhibition and street parties. Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play – Space Theatre

This dark comedy is set nearly a century into the future in post-apocalyptic America – a world without power where The Simpsons become a new kind of global religion. Mr Burns is being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA in collaboration with Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre, with preview performances beginning on Saturday. Silver Raven Festival – Tanunda

This year’s Silver Raven mini music fest at Turkey Flat Vineyards in the Barossa is headlined by US rock-folk musician Strand of Oaks, with other acts including Jonny Fritz, Sonny & the Sunsets, Henry Wagons & the Only Children, Jen Cloher, Lost Ragas, Ruby Boots, Wanderers and The San Sebastian. Gates open at noon.

Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci – Festival Theatre

The final performance of this State Opera double bill will be at the Festival Theatre on Saturday night. Australian tenor Rosario La Spina plays the lead role in both Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci, two classic Italian tragedies which offer numerous moments of power and passion. “Cavalleria Rusticana / I Pagliacci is a night of loveseduction, jealousy, abandonment and abuse; the classic stuff of opera,” writes InDaily‘s reviewer.

Festival Fleurieu

More than 100 events are taking place across dozens of venues throughout the Fleurieu Peninsula during this annual festival, which continues until the end of April. The program includes an Artists’ Studio Trail, exhibitions, live music, literary events and more. As part of the festival, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will present a Bush Concert at Yankalilla’s Jubilee Hall at 11.30am and 1.30pm on Saturday.

French Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

This is the final weekend of the 2017 Alliance Française French Film Festival, a showcase of contemporary French cinema at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas including comedies, dramas and documentaries. See the full program here.

Yidaki – Didjeridu and The Sound of Australia – SA Museum

Created in collaboration with the Yolngu people, cultural custodians of the yidaki (didjeridu), this landmark exhibition explores the cultural and musical origins of the instrument, as well as its power and meaning in Yolngu life. Read more here. The exhibition continues at the SA Museum until July 16.

Versus Rodin: Bodies Through Time and Space – Art Gallery of SA

This show brings together key pieces by Auguste Rodin, the pioneer of modern sculpture, with more than 200 works referencing the human body by other modern and contemporary artists. Unsettled: Colonial Ruin in the Flinders Ranges – State Library

Stories from the Flinders Ranges are shared through a mixture of media art, photography, archival imagery and documentary interviews in Unsettled. The exhibition seeks to move beyond what it describes as “the nostalgia typical of settler-colonial representations”, and includes striking portraits of Adnyamathanha people taken at the Nepabunna Mission by Charles Mountford in the 1930s. FELTdark: Street Cinema – Compton Street

FELTspace gallery is celebrating the first anniversary of its FELTdark moving image exhibition space tonight (Friday) with a street/art party and film night in Compton Street. FELTdark begins at 6pm and will feature moving-image works showing on three screens, plus live performance, music, food and drink.

The Screwtape Letters / Educating Rita – Bakehouse Theatre

CS Lewis’s dark comedy The Screwtape Letters – following the correspondence between a senior Demon, Screwtape, and his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter – is being presented by Clock & Spiel Productions at the Bakehouse, with the final show on Saturday night. Also currently showing at the theatre, after a sold-out season earlier this year, is Educating Rita.

RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider.
