What’s on: Scottish song and dance, oceans of art

A Scottish music showcase featuring the ASO, open-air movies at Glenelg, a SkaBQ mini-fest at The Gov, a pre-tour gig by folkster Kaurna Cronin, oceans of visual art, and a play where everything goes wrong.

Scotland the Brave – Festival Theatre

A showcase of traditional Scottish music, song and dance, Scotland the Brave will feature members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra with more than 100 choral singers, pipe band and drum corps, soloists (including soprano Cheryl Baker), highland dancers and Celtic fiddlers. It is suitable for an all-ages audience, with two performances at the Festival Theatre tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

Openair Cinema – Glenelg Foreshore

The Mel Gibson-directed war film Hacksaw Ridge – which tells the true story of a World War II soldier who refused to carry a weapon – is showing at Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema tonight (Friday). Other screenings include Moana (Saturday), La La Land (Sunday), Manchester by the Sea (Tuesday) and Moonlight (Wednesday). Gates open at 6pm and films begin at sunset; BYO picnic blanket or bean lounger.

Melbourne Ska Orchestra / Kingswood – The Gov

Melbourne-Ska-Orchestra-Ian-LaidlawStarting at 4pm on Sunday, SkaBQ will be a mini festival with smoking barbecue food and a whole lot of ska music from the ARIA-award-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra and guests Lucky Seven (“swing meets ska”), Babylon Burning (“ska-ified roots set”), Fist Full of Trojans, and DJs DJ Pablito, Old Skool Andy and Kilmarnock Steve. On Saturday night at The Gov you can catch rockers Kingswood, touring on the back of their latest album, After Hours, Close to Dawn.

Kaurna Cronin – The Grace Emily

Adelaide folkster Kaurna Cronin and his band will perform at The Grace Emily on Sunday night before leaving on a four-month tour in Europe. The gig will include songs from their forthcoming album, Euphoria, Delirium & Loneliness, and their recently released last album, Southern Loss. They’ll be supported by Kelly Menhennett and Ryan Martin-John.

Versus Rodin: Bodies Through Time and Space – Art Gallery of SA

This exhibition brings together key pieces by Auguste Rodin, the pioneer of modern sculpture, with more than 200 works referencing the human body by other modern and contemporary artists. Read more about the works and the artists here. Versus Rodin is at the gallery until July 2, with guided tours daily at 11am and 2pm.

Countercurrents & The Ocean After Nature – Samstag Museum

These concurrent exhibitions at the Samstag Museum of Art comprise work with an oceanic theme. Countercurrents, showing until April 3, features painting, video, sculpture, installation and photography works by eight artists exploring the complex history linked to the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Ocean After Nature (until June 9) considers “the ocean as a site reflecting the ecological, cultural, political and economic realities of a globalised world” through the work of 16 international artists and collectives.

Killer Queen Experience – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Brisbane-based Queen tribute band KillerQueen, featuring Freddie Mercury impersonator John Blunt, have been performing since 2003, touring their fully costumed homage to the British rock group all over the world. They will perform one show at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday.

This touring British comedy sees mayhem unleashed when an accident-prone amateur drama society tries to stage a 1920s murder mystery. A hit in the West End, it’s being presented here with a mostly Australian cast whom UK director Mark Bell promises will be “hopelessly hilarious”. The Play That Goes Wrong opens at Her Majesty’s Theatre on March 28, with performances through to April 2.

STEEL: art design architecture – Jam Factory

Curated by the JamFactory’s Margaret Hancock Davis, this touring exhibition shows the innovative ways in which 29 artists, designers and architects in Australia are using steel in the 21st century. The range of approaches is broad, from hand-crafted jewellery to steel used in high-tech research facilities. STEEL: art design architecture is at the JamFactory in Adelaide until April 23 and will then move to the Seppeltsfield JamFactory in the Barossa from May 13 – July 16.

NEO Teen Takeover – Art Gallery

Neo-Teen-Takeover-1-Art-Gallery-of-SAThe gallery will celebrate National Youth Week with a free event for teenagers from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Friday, March 31, featuring film, music, dancing, theatre and circus performances. The Teen Takeover includes access to the whole gallery and is suitable for ages 13 to 17. Registrations and info here.

RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider.
