Nouvelle Vague – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Parisian punk-pop outfit Nouvelle Vague will bring their bossa nova style and “French Noir cool” to Adelaide with a So Frenchy So Chic Live show next Wednesday (January 18) at Her Maj. Audiences can expect songs from their new album, I Could Be Happy, as well as the group’s unique covers of songs such as “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Dancing with Ourselves”. Deadly 60 Live! – Her Majesty’s Theatre

English naturalist and TV presenter Steve Backshall is back in Australia with a new show based on the hit BBC Earth series Deadly 60 Pole to Pole. He shares his experiences travelling from the South Pole to the North Pole, and his encounters with deadly creatures. There will be five performances of Deadly 60 Live at Her Maj this Saturday and Sunday.

Catch an advance screening of the much-talked-about new film Lion, starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel, at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park on Sunday. Other upcoming screenings include JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (tonight), Trolls (Saturday), XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (Tuesday), Split (Wednesday) and The Girl on the Train (Thursday). Painters and Dockers – The Gov

With more than 1500 shows and seven albums under their belt, Melbourne band Painters and Dockers are touring once more with a gig at The Gov on Saturday night. They’re supported by special guests Velvet Moth.

Dusty – Adelaide Festival Centre

This touring musical tells the story of the life and music of pop star Dusty Springfield, from her rise to fame in the swinging ’60s through to her later career and all the trials and tribulations in between. Starring Amy Lehpamer (The Sound of Music), Todd McKenney (The Boy From Oz) and Virginia Gay (Winners & Losers), it is at the Festival Theatre until January 22.

Raiders of the Lost Archives – State Library

This latest “escape room” experience from Fire Hazard (the team behind Citydash and Undercover) will see adventurers exploring the library, following clues, solving puzzles and competing with up other teams. The first Raiders of the Lost Archives game (this Sunday) has already sold out, but there will be further events on January 17, 19 and 22. Details here.

Sappers & Shrapnel workshops – Art Gallery of SA

Sappers & Shrapnel artist Olga Cironis will host an afternoon of sculpting and talisman crafting using upcycled household items this Sunday (January 15) from midday until 4pm in the Art Gallery‘s Radford Auditorium. On Monday, artist Olga Cironis will lead two sculpture workshops with a futuristic focus. Details here. Sappers & Shrapnel is inspired by trench art – objects made from the waste of warfare, and includes both work from the Australian War Memorial’s collection and contemporary artists including Fiona Hall and Ben Quilty.

PJ Harvey – Thebarton Theatre

British musician PJ Harvey is touring Australia with her 10-piece band on the back of her ninth studio album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, which is said to document an artistic journey that took Harvey to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington DC. The Adelaide show is on January 19 and tickets were still available at the time of publication.

According to Rumour – Bakehouse Theatre

Presented by Max’s Masters theatre company, According to Rumour is the story of a recent divorcee who “wakes up after a night he will never remember to find an unexplained stash of cash and an unwanted visit from his family, the local policeman, the mail-woman and anyone else who feels like dropping by”. It opens at the Bakehouse tonight, with performances continuing until January 20.

Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition – State Library

Ninety stunning photos are on display in this exhibition showcasing winners and finalists from the 2016 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism. They range from harrowing images of war to those capturing triumphant moments in sport and the beauty of artistic achievement.
