OzAsia Festival

The 2016 OzAsia Festival includes dozens of events encompassing theatre, dance, music, visual art and film. They include Chinese contemporary dance work As If To Nothing (Sept 22-24), Cambodia’s Phare Circus (Sept 27–Oct 2), and an Indian production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (Sept 23-24). There is also a series of free outdoor concerts in Elder Park and a film program at the Mercury Cinema. Good Fortune Market – Elder Park

Head to Elder Park for Asian street food and entertainment during the OzAsia Festival. The Good Fortune Market features some of Adelaide’s finest Asian food vendors including Beyond India, Mai Kitchen, Hoy Pinoy and Pun Thai, with offerings such as fresh dumplings, pork buns, curries and more. The market is open from 5pm on week days and from 12pm until late on weekends.

Italian Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

This cinematic celebration of Italian culture promises some of the best films to have come out of Italy in the last 12 months across genres ranging from comedy and drama to crime and romance. There will be a special launch screening of Australian-Italian co-production The Space Between (above) on Saturday, followed by a Q&A with writer-director Ruth Borgobello. ASO: Elgar’s Cello Concerto – Town Hall

Featuring cellist Simon Cobcroft and conducted by Michael Stern, this Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Masters Series concert presents Elgar’s last substantial composition, written at the end of World War I. The program also includes Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Prokofiev’s Symphony No 5. Performances are at the Town Hall tonight (Friday) and Saturday.

Diesel / Reverend Horton Heat – The Gov

Saturday night’s show at the Governor Hindmarsh by Diesel will feature songs from his 15-album career as well as singles from his latest release, Americana, which pays tribute to the musicians who inspired him, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. On Sunday night at The Gov, you can catch the “unholy high priest of psychobilly” Reverend Horton Heat.

Red Sky Morning – Bakehouse Theatre

Australian playwright Tom Holloway’s Red Sky Morning is set over the course of a single day in regional Australia, exploring the hidden malaise at the heart of an ordinary family. Read InDaily’s review here. It is being presented under the State Theatre Company’s State Umbrella program, with performances at the Bakehouse Theatre until September 30.

Indofest – North Terrace

This cultural and culinary celebration of Indonesia will feature live performances – including by Sydney’s Suara Indonesia Dance Group and Adelaide’s Adelindo Angklung orchestra – along with workshops, craft stalls, cooking demonstrations and street food. Indofest is on North Terrace, next to the SA Museum, from 11am until 4pm on Sunday.

Art After Dark: Sympathy for the Devil – Samstag Museum

Soundstream Collective is presenting this world premiere adaptation of John Milton’s  Paradise Lost (1674) from sound artist Christopher Williams at the Samstag Museum of Art at 6pm on Thursday, September 29. It will be narrated by actors Paul Blackwell, Ksenja Logos and Rory Walker. Bookings essential.

Experimenta Recharge – Samstag Museum

Experimenta Recharge, the 6th International Biennial of Media Art, features the work of 20 Australian and international artists who employ, critique and experiment with media and technology. It is at Samstag Museum of Art until September 23.

Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA

Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition – Ayers House

Sarah Snook in The Dressmaker – costumes from the film are on display at Ayers House Museum.

More than 50 costumes worn by actors including Kate Winslet and Sarah Snook in Australian film The Dressmaker are on display in this exhibition at Ayers House Museum until December 11. The display, developed for the National Trust by award-winning designer Marion Boyce, offers a taste of 1950s Parisian couture. Details here.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year – SA Museum

Stunning photographs capturing the natural beauty of the Australian, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea bioregion – including flora, fauna and landscapes – are on display in this exhibition at the SA Museum until October 3.
