What’s on: Moon lanterns, music, movies and more

Elder Park will be lit up by the colourful Moon Lantern Festival this weekend, heralding the start of OzAsia. Other events include shows by Frenzal Rhomb and oud player Joseph Tawadros, and a veritable smorgasbord of visual art.

Moon Lantern Festival – Elder Park

More than a kilometre of pink, yellow and red lanterns will be placed around Elder Park for this popular feature of the annual OzAsia Festival. Beginning at 2pm on Sunday, the Moon Lantern Festival will feature lantern installations, live entertainment, food vendors and workshops. The lantern parade – led by a 40-person-long Hong Kong dragon lantern – will take place after sunset, and the evening will end with fireworks over the River Torrens. Details here.

OzAsia Festival

While most OzAsia live shows begin next week, the film program has already started at the Mercury Cinema and features a selection of award-winning films from across Asia (details here). Also as part of OzAsia, the Art Gallery of SA is tonight unveiling Ever Blossoming, a new acquisition and one of a collection of interactive installations by Japan’s teamLab being presented at the gallery and Samstag Museum. Other OzAsia visual art exhibitions are showing as ArtSpace, CACSA, Nexus and Adelaide Central Gallery.

Frenzal Rhomb & Formidable Vegetable Sound System – The Gov

Frenzal Rhomb are playing at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday night as part of a tour celebrating the release of a new album of old songs celebrating their silver jubilee year. On Sunday at The Gov, WA eco-swing-funk group Formidable Vegetable Sound System will launch their latest album “full of energetic electro-glitch ukulele quirk, hyperactive horns and simple solutions for sustainability”.

ASO: Mozart in Victor

As part of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Out of the CBD series, Nicholas Carter will conduct this concert of music by Ravel, Mozart, Lennon and McCartney and others at the Investigator College Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Performing alongside the orchestra musicians at Mozart in Victor will be the Granite Community Band. Tickets for the ASO’s concert tonight at Murray Bridge have already sold out.

Red Sky Morning – Bakehouse Theatre

Australian playwright Tom Holloway’s Red Sky Morning is set over the course of a single day in regional Australia, exploring the hidden malaise at the heart of an ordinary family. Read InDaily’s review here. It is being presented under the State Theatre Company’s State Umbrella program, with performances at the Bakehouse Theatre until September 30.

Joseph Tawadros – Nexus

Oud player and composer Joseph Tawadros will perform music from his new album World Music at Nexus Arts, Lions Arts Centre. Joining Tawadros as he plays the oud and other instruments will be Matt McMahon (piano), Karl Dunnicliff (bass) and James Tawadros (percussion).

Korean Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas

This four-day festival, which is in Adelaide until Sunday, features a small selection of films offering a diverse taste of Korean cinema, from thrillers to rom-coms, comedy and art-house offerings. See the full line-up here.

James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra – Her Majesty’s Theatre

This 20-piece jazz orchestra, led by soloist and director James Morrison, promises audiences a trip down memory lane with a performance of fresh arrangements of well-known jazz standards, as well as a new work by young and established Australian artists. The musicians are all from Morrison’s academy, which opened in Mount Gambier in 2015. They’re performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre at 7pm on Tuesday, September 20.

Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA

Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition – Ayers House

More than 50 costumes worn by actors including Kate Winslet and Sarah Snook in Australian film The Dressmaker are on display in this exhibition at Ayers House Museum until December 11. The display, developed for the National Trust by award-winning designer Marion Boyce, offers a taste of 1950s Parisian couture. Details here.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year – SA Museum

Well, hello! Smallspotted combtooth blenny, David Westcott – winner Animal Behaviour category in the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year.

Stunning photographs capturing the natural beauty of the Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea bioregion – including flora, fauna and landscapes – are on display in this exhibition at the SA Museum until October 3.

Experimenta Recharge – Samstag Museum

Experimenta Recharge, the 6th International Biennial of Media Art, features the work of 20 Australian and international artists who employ, critique and experiment with media and technology. It is at Samstag Museum of Art until September 23.

Fiona Hall – All the King’s Men – Art Gallery of SA

All the King’s Men is the masterwork from Fiona Hall’s 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition Wrong Way Time. The installation includes 20 sculptures suspended in space that are made from military uniforms, with mask-like heads and ghostly, skeletal bodies.
