ASO Remastered  /  Elegant Tchaikovsky – Town Hall

Arvo Volmer is conducting the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Elegant Tchaikovsky concert at the Adelaide Town Hall this weekend. Coinciding with the concert tonight (Friday), the orchestra is also launching its new under-30s initiative, ReMastered, with an after-party in the Adina Apartment Hotel tunnels featuring percussive guitarist Simeon Baker and international cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan (soloist in Elegant Tchaikovsky).

Katie Noonan & The Brodsky Quartet – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Australian singer-songwriter Katie Noonan (above) has teamed up with Britain’s Brodsky Quartet for With Sound and Fury, a concert featuring works by 10 respected composers inspired by the poetry of Judith Wright. With Sound and Fury, which will have just one performance in Adelaide at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday, will also feature music from the Brodskys’ Bjork and Elvis Costello catalogue.

Tasting Australia

This week-long South Australian food festival begins on Sunday, with a packed program of events including long lunches, food tours, tastings, master-classes and more. Fork on the Road has partnered with Tasting Australia for the opening on Sunday of the event’s “Town Square” in Victoria Square, which will be hosting “eating and thinking sessions” daily throughout the festival.  Also on Sunday is the Taste Glynde free community event. Little Shop of Horrors – Her Maj

The Australian revival of this cult musical about a hapless flower shop attendant who finds himself engaged in a botanical battle with a carnivorous plant is campy, creepy and seriously good fun, says InDaily’s reviewer. Little Shop of Horrors is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre until April 30.

SA History Festival

There will be more than 600 events across the state as part of this year’s History Festival, which begins on Sunday and continues until May 31. They range from open days and tours of buildings and sites of historic interest, to talks, exhibitions, performances and workshops. View the full program here.

2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art & First Fridays

With the theme Magic Object, the 2016 Adelaide Biennial draws inspiration from the “Wunderkammer” – rooms or cabinets displaying eclectic collections of exotic artworks and natural objects. The biennial, which continues until May 15, encompasses exhibitions at the Art Gallery of SA, Samstag Museum of Art, Jam Factory, Santos Museum of Economic Botany and Carrick Hill. Next Friday (May 6), the Art Gallery will host its monthly First Fridays after-hours event, with guided tours and performances by Australian Dance Theatre and Koral & The Goodbye Horses.

The Drones and Adelaide Ukes – The Gov

Australian band The Drones (above) are playing at The Governor Hindmarsh tonight (Friday) as part of a tour celebrating the release of their seventh studio LP, Feelin’ Kind of Free. On Saturday, members of the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society will be performing Adelaide Ukuleles in Concert, with guests AP d’Antonio and Dogpatch.

Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – Elder Hall

Following his performance with the ASO on Friday and Saturday, visiting Armenian cellist Hakhnazaryan will perform alongside pianist Anna Goldsworthy at a Recitals Australia concert in Elder Hall at 2.30pm on Sunday. The program (available here) will include works by Tchaikovsky , Fauré, Debussy and Shostakovich.

Machu Picchu – Dunstan Playhouse

Writer Sue Smith’s Machu Picchu  follows Paul and Gabby, two mid-life engineers whose lives and relationship change dramatically after a serious car accident leaves Paul with spinal injuries.  A State Theatre Company of SA and Sydney Theatre Company co-production, it is playing in Adelaide  until May 1. Rufus – Thebarton Theatre

Fresh from their performance at the Coachella music festival in California, Sydney trio Rufus are kicking off their new tour of Australia with a gig tonight at the Thebby. The Bloom World Tour comes on the back of the group’s latest album, which saw them take out two spots in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100.

The Mikado – Adelaide Showground

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of SA and Co-Opera  production of this G&S comic opera is back in Adelaide after a tour of regional Australia. There will be six cabaret-style performances of The Mikado at the Thomas Edmonds Opera Studio, Adelaide Showground, from May 6-15. Details here.

ASO’s Movie Masterpieces – Festival Theatre

For one night only next Friday (May 6), the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will present Movie Masterpieces, a concert featuring music from popular films including Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Harry Potter, ET and Pirates of the Caribbean. It will be presented by film critic Margaret Pomeranz and conducted by Guy Noble.

Shields: Power and Protection in Aboriginal Australia – SA Museum

This exhibition at the South Australian Museum explores the role of shields in Aboriginal culture and history. As well as being used in individual and group conflict, carved and painted shields carry symbolism and affirm ancestral links. Shields continues until May 22.

Wee Free Men – Bakehouse Theatre

Adelaide’s Unseen Theatre Company once again allows audiences to peer into Sir Terry Pratchett’s fantastical “Discworld” with the stage premiere of The Wee Free Men. The play,  reviewed here by InDaily, is at the Bakehouse Theatre until April 30.
