First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

The Art Gallery of SA’s new exhibition Public Image, Private Lives: Family, Friends and Self in Photography will be launched at tonight’s First Fridays after-hours (5-9pm) event. There will be live music by swing band The Various Nefarious, talks by curator Julie Robinson and exhibiting artist Mark Kimber, a stylised photo booth, plus a barbecue and bar. Public Image, Private Lives, which continues until July 3, features works by artists including Max Dupain, Andy Warhol, William Yang, Trent Parke and Harold Cazneaux.

St Jerome’s Laneway Festival

Laneway returns to the Hart’s Mill site at Port Adelaide today (Friday) with a line-up including Flume, Japanese Wallpaper, Grimes, Hermitude, Violent Soho, Vince Staples and Fidlar. There will also be food trucks, plus vintage items and records for sale. Tickets still available.

Carnavale Italian Festival – Adelaide Showground

This annual festival is celebrating its 40^th anniversary this weekend. Saturday will feature a multicultural entertainment line-up, with groups such as the Burundian Drummers’ Club and Kalalya-Indian Dancers performing alongside Italian entertainers. Special events include wine seminars with Italian sommelier Alessandro Ragazzo, mozzarella-stretching workshops, and screenings of the 1960s film They’re a Weird Mob. Carnevale runs across Saturday and Sunday, and will also feature Italian food, a car show, cooking demos and kids’ activities.

All You Need is Love – Festival Theatre

This Beatles tribute show features 30 of the Fab Four’s classic songs performed by singers Jack Jones, Darren Percival, Jackson Thomas and Ciaran Gribbin. They will be accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for two performances at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night. Limited seats still available. Fork in the Summer

Fork on the Road will be at a new location on Saturday in a collaboration with the City of West Torrens. The Fork in the Summer event runs from 5-10pm and will see 30 new and established food trucks pulling up at Kings Reserve, corner South Road and Ashwin Parade, Torrensville. There will be music from The Baker Suite, Banjo Jackson, Kaurna Cronin and Paige Renee Court on an outdoor stage, rock ’n’ roll dance demonstrations, DJs, a classic car display and kids’ activities. Sym Choon Lane Arts Market

Local artists will be showcasing their work at this new East End arts market in Sym Choon Lane from 5pm today (Friday) and every Friday this month. Many of the artists will be present to discuss their work, with live music and a bar adding to the vibe. Sym Choon Lane Arts Market is right next door to the Ebenezer Night Markets, which sell hand-crafted products and street food.

The Empire Strips Back – Her Maj

Subtitled A Star Wars Burlesque Parody and presented by Russall S Beattie, this show takes characters from the Star Wars films and drops them into the world of burlesque. Audiences can expect “seriously sexy Stormtroopers” and “a Darth with a different kind of dark side”. It’s recommended for ages 18 plus, combining striptease with song, dance and comedy. There’s one performance only at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday night – but Beattie will also be bringing his new show Jaded Vanities to the Adelaide Fringe.

Ronnie Taheny – The Gov

SA singer-songwriter Ronnie Taheny will launch her eighth studio album, START, with a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday. The album features eight piano and two guitar tracks, with the latter underpinned by Taheny’s duo partner Ben Ford-Davies, who will join her for the launch gig, along with Jarrad Payne on drums and  Flik Freeman on bass.

Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

Oscar-nominated drama Joy is screening at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park tonight (Friday), with other upcoming films including The Revenant (Saturday), Brooklyn (Sunday), Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Zoolander 2. Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown. Full program online.

Adelaide Cinémathèque – Mercury Cinema

Ranch Nights is the theme of the Mercury’s latest Cinémathèque season, which began this week and puts the spotlight firmly on old westerns. Films screening throughout this month include John Ford’s The Searchers, starring John Wayne (February 8), Nicholas Ray’s Johnny Guitar, Henry King’s The Gunfighter and Aussie-made 1936 Western Rangle River (aka “Men with Whips”). Fleurieu Film Festival – McLaren Vale

Filmmakers were asked to submit short films with the theme Landscape for the inaugural Fleurieu Film Festival, with the winners to be announced at a special event on Saturday at the McLaren Vale / Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre. There will be outdoor screenings of the top three films, as well as award-winning SA feature film Touch, plus live music, food and drink. Details here.

Opals – SA Museum

The Opals exhibition at the South Australian Museum is said to showcase the finest collection of opals ever assembled in one place. Visitors can learn about the ancient origins of Australia’s national gemstone, the science of opals and the techniques of mining in harsh outback environments. The Treasure Room features specimens including the world’s most valuable opal, the Virgin Rainbow. The exhibition is open week days until February 14, with a special late-night opening until 8pm on Saturday, February 13.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries exhibition & Summer Festival of Phyrne

Close to 50 costumes created by award-winning costume designer Marion Boyce and featured in ABC TV’s third series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries are on display in this exhibition at historic Ayres House Museum until February 14. The National Trust has also this month begun its Summer Festival of Phryne, with events including a 1920s speakeasy pop-up bar at Z Ward, Glenside, on Saturday evening (February 6).
