Who Am I – No System Is Safe

May 29, 2015

Adelaide is being treated to a mini version of the German Film Festival, with only 15 of the 50 selected movies on show over the weekend at Palace Nova in Rundle Street.  So be quick – there is only one chance to see each film.

The opening night film was Who Am I – No System Is Safe, a cyber-thriller from director Baran bo Odar.  It stars Tom Schilling as Benjamin, the typical loner (or loser…) who gains notoriety as a brilliant computer hacker.

Benjamin’s talents are noticed by Max, played menacingly by Elyas M’Barek, who wants to “hack the world”.  Max and Benjamin gather a group of assorted misfits and geeks together and form CLAY, a global hacker collective.  They’re successful but not infallible – the film opens with Benjamin being interrogated by Europol.

Who Am I – No System Is Safe is standard teenage thriller fare.  It glorifies partying and illegal activity, all dressed up with some smart special effects.  It’s not showing again in Adelaide, so you’ve missed it for now, but it will probably be on SBS2 in no time.

There’s a good line-up of interesting films screening at the festival over the weekend.  The two highlights, for me, are The Dark Valley (6pm, Sunday), a Western set in the splendour of the Swiss Alps, and the closing film Beloved Sisters (8.30pm, Sunday).  Unfortunately, the most impressive presentation of the Festival, Faust, with a live soundtrack, isn’t coming to Adelaide.

The Audi Festival of German Films opened in Adelaide on Wednesday evening with nary an Audi in sight.  There was a glass of Carrington bubbly – sadly not German – and a lightly salted pretzel bun from a local bakery.

The full film festival program is online.
