Cabaret Fringe artists Luna Eclipse and The Marvellous Miz Demenors.

This weekend’s entertainment ranges from the opening of the Cabaret Fringe Festival to a celebration of Steampunk at Port Adelaide.

Other events include the Come Out Children’s Festival, gigs by Ash Grunwald and Akoustic Odyssey, a showcase of German films, and a new exhibition by Indigenous artist Jacob Stengle at Tandanya.

Cabaret Fringe Festival

Stars of Weimar-era show the Berlin Cabaret are hosting tonight’s Cabaret Fringe opening gala at The German Club. The gala, offering a taster of what’s to come over the month-long festival, will also feature performers such as “cabaret chanteuse” Candy Chambers, burlesque artist Luna Eclipse and Marduk Flamenco. On Saturday and Sunday at La Boheme, four-part harmony act The Marvellous Miz Demenors will present their new “mischievous comedy cabaret” show Play With That, with support from vocalist/pianist John Hill and drummer Ben Schumann.  Come Out Children’s Festival

WP-Carnival of Animals

This nine-day festival wraps up this weekend, but there is still plenty to see and do. Among the Come Out shows on today and tomorrow are Company @’s History of Autism at the Opera Studio in Netley (read InDaily preview here), Circa’s Carnival of Animals (review) at the Dunstan Playhouse and Chalk About in the Space Theatre (review). State Theatre and Griffin Theatre Company co-production Masquerade, based on an adaptation of author Kit Williams’ kids’ book of the same name, is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre until Sunday.

Don Giovanni

The final performance of this State Opera of South Australia production is tomorrow night at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre. InDaily’s reviewer recommends it as “marvellous entertainment from start to finish”, with Grant Doyle commanding in the title role of the seducer and rake Don Giovanni. Details here.

Steampunk 2Steampunk Festival

The National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide is hosting a Steampunk Festival on Saturday and Sunday, with steam train rides, food stalls, a bar, artwork and Steampunk-inspired clothing and trinkets for sale.  Not sure what Steampunk is? “Think corsetry and top hats, steam-powered computers and robots, HG Wells, the American Civil War, Dr Who and Jules Verne,” say they organisers. There will also be live entertainment on Saturday night. More info here.

German Film Festival

Germany’s highest-grossing film of the year, the comedy Suck Me Shakespeer, is screening tonight at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas as part of the Audi Festival of German Films. Also showing over the weekend is a German adaptation of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huck Finn, multi-layered thriller Stereo, and drama/western The Dark Valley. The festival continues until Sunday, with the full program online.

Akoustic Odyssey

Adelaide-based instrumental group Akoustic Odyssey are playing a free gig tonight at 9pm at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. With influences as diverse as rock, classical, jazz, Spanish, African and Celtic music, the group play instruments including classical and steel string guitars, bass guitar, cello, violin, percussion, flute, clarinet and saxophone.

Ash Grunwald

Ash-Grunwald

Australian singer-songwriter Ash Grunwald is playing at The Gov tonight (Friday) as part of a tour celebrating the release of his latest single, “River”. Described by promoters as “a song to fill the belly with fire, the heart with integrity and the limbs with the energy for action”, it offers a sample of what’s in store when he releases his new album later in the year. Doors open at 7.30pm.

AMC Jazz Sessions

Keith Conlon will be hosting the Adelaide Music Collective’s Jazz Sessions tonight (Friday) at the Goodwood Institute, with the line-up including the Mike Stewart Big Band featuring Bob Jeffery, plus Bill Polain, Marmalade Trio and The New Cabal. The evening will also see another group of musicians inducted into the SA Hall of Fame, including Polain, Jeffery and the late jazz musician Mike Stewart.

Karumapuli exhibition – Tandanya

South Australian artist Jacob Stengle’s new solo exhibition is titled Karumapuli, the Ngarrindjeri word for Boobook Owl, which was the totem of his maternal grandfather Milerum (Clarence Long).  Showing at Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute until July 18, the exhibition includes large-scale paintings and drawings inspired by the artist’s personal and cultural history.  A member of the stolen generation, Stengle this year began signing his works “Karumapuli” as part of the process of reconnecting with his Ngarrindjeri culture. Comedian Frenchy – Live and Lanky

Stand-up comedian and Triple J Raw Comedy state finalist Franky, who has garnered a huge internet following from his YouTube channel SungaAttack, is performing his show Live and Lanky at the Arkaba Hotel on Saturday.  He promises it will cover all the “hot topics” – from speed dating and Tinder, to wizards and muggles.

Small Gods – Bakehouse Theatre

Small Gods is the 13th novel in fantasy author Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, with the main targets of his wit being religion and intolerance. Unseen Theatre Company’s production, based on an adaptation by director Pamela Munt, is described by InDaily’s reviewer as a “rip-snorting saga”. It’s playing at Bakehouse Theatre until May 30.

Basil Sellers Art Prize 4

This touring exhibition at the Samstag Museum of Art features work by artists who participated in the most recent Basil Sellers Art Prize, which explores Australia’s obsession with sport and sporting culture. The 2014 prize was won by Indigenous artist Tony Albert. Other artists whose work is on display include Shaun Gladwell, Narelle Autio, Rob McLeish and Khaled Sabsabi. The exhibition continues until July 3.

Lynley Dodd – A Retrospective

This exhibition at the State Library of South Australia celebrates the work of children’s author and artist Lynley Dodd. It comprises more than 50 original artworks from Dodd’s books, including the Hairy Maclary series, the Schnitzel Von Krumm series, Slinky Malinki and Scarface Claw. The retrospective continues until June 14.
