This long weekend you can head to the Hills for the Crush Festival, see Sneaky Sound System headlining the Australia Day concert in Elder Park, catch the latest Tour action or get your sci-fi fix with the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular.

Australia Day

Sneaky Sound System will headline the Australia Day in the City concert in Elder Park on Monday, with other music acts including Brothers3 and Adelaide singer-songwriter Kaurna Cronin. The Australia Day Parade (including vintage cars, horses, floats and a giant echidna) will begin at 6pm at Victoria Square, making its way to the park, and there will be a 21-gun salute performed from the King William Bridge. The concert will begin at 7pm, with a fireworks finale at 10pm. Full details can be found online.

Survival Day

A day of free activities on the Sempahore Foreshore will celebrate the resilience and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Hosted by Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute and Kura Yerlo Inc, the 2015 Survival Day event will feature traditional dance performances, live music from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists (including Michael Collard, aka “The Big Sexy”), stalls, workshops and kids’ events. It begins at 11am on Monday, with fireworks at 9pm.

Crush Adelaide Hills Food & Wine Festival

The annual Crush Festival promises a feast of events combining wine, food, art, music and lawn games. Essential Theatre Company and Deviation Road Winery will be kicking off the weekend with a performance tonight (Friday) of Macbeth at the winery’s Longwood vineyard, with other non-ticketed events including a Mad Hatter’s Ball at Howard Vineyard (Nairne); acid jazz and regional platters at Petaluma (Bridgewater); a CRFT Wines and Ten Miles East Sunday Session featuring local singer-songwriters Kelly Menhennett and Sasha March at Norton Summit; and live Latin music and Argentinean street food with Johnston Oakbank and O’Leary Walker (Oakbank). More than 35 wineries are participating in the three-day Crush festival, with the full program of cellar door and cluster events online.

Orchard Cider Festival

This free festival in Light Square on Saturday will feature local ciders, street food and live entertainment. The music line-up includes Ollie English, Shaun Kemp, Iron Empire and Trent Worley, with the festival running from noon until 9pm.

Tour Down Under – Fork on the Road

There are plenty of Tour-linked community events this weekend, including a Park Party in McLaren Vale to mark the start of Saturday’s Stage Five racing, a Beach Party at Aldinga Beach, a Peloton Picnic at Willunga and a Blackwood Bikefest. A family day will be held in Elder Park on Sunday (9am-4pm), with more than 30 Fork on the Road mobile food vendors and plenty of kids’ activities including the Imagination Playground and jumping castle. Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular

Hosted by fifth doctor Peter Davison, this show features live music from the latest series of Doctor Who, presented against a backdrop of edited sequences from both new and old episodes of the TV sci-fi show. The performance will feature the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra alongside a large cast of actors and singers – plus Daleks, Cybermen and other Doctor Who characters. There will be two performances on Saturday (2pm and 7.30pm) at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. You can read InDaily’s interview with the UK composer for the show here.

Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures

This annual indoor and outdoor exhibition of sculptures opened this week, with more than 100 works on display at the Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubrooms, Bindarra Reserve and along the Esplanade Sculptures Walk. It will be open from 8am until 8pm every day until February.

The Illusionists 1903

The Illusionists are back with a new line-up and a show that re-creates “the golden age of magic – a time when conjurers were the true rock stars of the day”. The cast comprises The Immortal, The Eccentric, The Showman, The Conjuress, The Clairvoyants, The Maestro and The Daredevil. The Illusionists 1903 will be performing at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, until January 25.

Fashion Icons Up Late

Fashion in the 80s – from punk to power dressing is the theme of tonight’s Art Gallery of South Australia Up Late event. Shoulder pads and brightly coloured accessories are encouraged, and there will be a screening of The Fifth Element on the lawns. The gallery is hosting after-hours events with live music, tours, food and wine from 5.30pm until 10pm each Friday this month to coincide with its spring-summer exhibition of Parisian fashion. Fashion Icons comprises some 90 haute couture garments from the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and will run until February 15.

Moonlight Cinema

Foodie flick The Hundred Foot Journey, starring Helen Mirren, is screening tonight at Adelaide’s Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park. Read our review here. Saturday’s film is The Theory of Everything, about the relationship between physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife, and on Sunday you can take a retro trip with Tom Cruise in ’80s blockbuster Top Gun. Entry to the cinema is via Plane Tree Drive; gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown.

The River Deck Live Music Sessions

Adelaide Festival Centre is hosting a series of live performances by South Australian musicians and DJs throughout January at its new riverside bar The River Deck, overlooking the Torrens and Adelaide Oval. Tonight’s line-up is DJ Señorita (6.30pm) and the La Bomba Dancers (8.30pm). On Saturday night, you can hear Luke Million, followed by T-bot.

Iridescence – SA Museum

This exhibition at the South Australian Museum features beetles, bubbles, shells, fossils and myriad other items that illustrate the beauty of iridescence, “where colour is seen despite the absence of pigment”.  Exhibits have all been drawn from the museum’s own collection, and will be on display until March 15, 2015. “Iridescence is unique as it spans objects and specimens from across the museum’s collections and beyond,” says museum director Brian Oldman. “It is a phenomenon that few of us ever stop to consider, yet we have always marvelled at its beauty.”
