The Art Gallery of South Australia’s winter exhibitions draw to a close on Sunday 7 September. Dorrit Black: unseen forces and The World of Mortimer Menpes: painter, etcher, raconteur celebrate the fascinating lives of two influential, Adelaide-born artists. Here’s what the critics think…

If you haven’t seen the exhibitions yet or want to get closer to two of South Australia’s leading artists, make sure you visit the Art Gallery of South Australia over the closing week for two special events:

Face to Face Learn the ideas and techniques of cubist portraiture with Adelaide artist Deidre But-Husaim. Work with oil paint and pastel to create your own portraits inspired by the masters of modernism in this two day workshop. Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August, 10am – 4pm.

An Afternoon with Mortimer Menpes Gain rare insights into the life and work of Mortimer Menpes on the final day of the exhibition. Hear from the National Gallery of Victoria’s Senior Conservator of Painting, John Payne, art historian and author, Dr Gary Morgan and Art Gallery exhibition curator, Julie Robinson.
