The vibe is up, up, up in this phantasm of fun!
Fresh from Sydney, Matty Grey – all aplomb in an orange, red, yellow and green tux combo – is the host of the Grossed Out Game Show and he creates his own wonderland as a backdrop for games which entertain and engage; the tone he sets is infectious and irrepressible.
Grey is joined by offsiders Dr Cool and Professor Kit Cat, with the cast completed by special guest team captains. Drawn from a pool of willing Fringe performers, these captains embody vibrancy – the only thing that’s predictable is that you are going to have fun.
Cameron Knight and Jason Chong led the blue and yellow teams on Saturday in an unabashed display of playful banter, healthy competition and an abundance of entertainment.
Being a member of this live audience carried opportunity and expectation; participation was demanded. Interaction was an understatement, as almost anything went in the pursuit of first place. With games like Snotmageddon, Finding Nemo and Chubby Bunnies, how could you not have a good time?
This show has tweens on the radar, but it works because those with them are quickly drawn into the adventure. Matty Grey is all about the event and he works it beautifully; the craft of performance and this grossed-out version does the Fringe proud.
Kudos to Peter Green, whose Bakehouse Theatre embraces the arts and provides a flexible space in which we can experience it. Grey exploits this with the construction of a pseudo laboratory that in reality is a couple of sparkly tables plied with game materials: toilet rolls, tissues, robot fish (no expense spared), bowls of candy-coated chocolate and the ominous slime present mind-boggling possibilities. This is supported by lab coats, exotic glasses and sleeveless overalls – it’s all action!
The final words from my 10-year-old: “That was cool”.
