Adelaideans thinking of making the two-hour trek north for the Golden North Laura Fair should think about booking a room sooner rather than later, as local accommodation is selling out.

Laura Community Caravan Park manager Naomi Purdue said the site is booked out for the weekend, with the whole region set to benefit.

“I know a lot of people are going to other towns nearby as well,” Purdue said.

“It is fantastic to get the exposure and a lot of people that come this way that probably wouldn’t have otherwise.”

The Laura Fair typically attracts upwards of 10,000 people and injected around $3.5 million into the local economy last year.

Laura Fair committee secretary Murray Baker said that costs for the festival had doubled since before the pandemic but last year, in its first year back, attendance was high.

Local company Golden North is returning as the fair’s naming rights sponsor, backed by the South Australian Tourism Commission’s Regional Event Fund — an initiative geared towards growing events and boosting regional economies.

Northern Areas Council Mayor and former Laura Fair committee chair Sue Scarman said the fair prided itself on its market–like stalls showcasing the best South Australian products and produce.

Scarman said that a few years ago the event committee made the decision to “declare war on cheap Chinese shit”, and now Australian made, artisan and local were “prerequisites” for stallholders.

The Fair will have more than 100 stalls hosted by small businesses from across the state, with local musicians also showing off regional talent.

The Golden North Laura Fair runs from April 13 – 14 and 10 per cent of ticket sales revenue will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
